A Cousin Weekend

This weekend I was lucky enough to spend time with two of my cousins.  First, my cousin Sanam was in town for a conference, so we were able to have a fun belated Nowruz dinner at my local Persian restaurant and catch up.  She gave me these amazing ceramic pieces that she made.

I also went to see her show, put on by the Artstream Nomadic Gallery, which is in a converted Airstream trailer.  Of course, I had to buy a matching bowl for my fruit!

The next day I flew to Washington to see my parents and convinced Sanam’s sister, Massoumeh, to come down from Brooklyn with her husband, Sam, and their adorable daughter, Ruby.  We had lots of fun (photos courtesy of Mass):

Mass has been a great supporter of my quilting — she has “commissioned” two quilts to give to friends.  I made this quilt for her to send to her goddaughter in South Africa.

Mass picked the pattern and general fabric scheme.  I love a good zig zag, so this was really fun to make.

I backed it with my current fave, Moda 108″ dotties, and quilted it by echoing the zig zags.

I decided on white binding with a pop of red.

I really hope she will like it!

Mass and our other cousin, Mandy, also requested a gender-neutral quilt for their friend Lea, who is keeping the gender of her baby a surprise.  Lea and I have never met in person, but we follow each other on Instagram, so I had a bit of an idea of her style.

When I saw this quilt by Amy, I instantly had my plan and it came together very quickly.

I wanted to try something new, so I quilted the word “love” into the top.

The binding is Riley Blake “Marguerite Stripe” in green, which is printed on the bias!

I think this quilt is so simple yet effective!

WIP Wednesday – First Finishes of 2013

Now that my craft room is back in action and I fixed the tension issues on my Juki, I’ve been bitten by the productivity bug.

WIP Wednesday 2-12

I finished the Sock Monkey 9-Patch, started and completed my HMQG Madrona Road challenge quilt, and quilted the pink zig zag quilt!

Pips Apple Core Quilting

I’m so happy about my Juki that I put this quilt under the needle, even though I probably should be working on this…

WIP Wednesday – Back in Black

So apparently I went on vacation and then started a home renovation and totally forgot about my poor little blog.  Well I’m going to attempt to ignore that and just pick up where I left off.  First order of business, a little inventory of where I stand with my WIPs since my last post!

I decided to delete all projects from the list that were completed in 2012 and start over with a new tally for this year.  I completed my second Formation quilt as well as my FMF Irish Chain quilt, but they aren’t on the list below.  I actually finished the spring green and yellow baby quilt, but suffered a tragic batting implosion (more on that later), so I have unpicked the quilting and will attempt to rescue this beauty.

Retro Flowers Unpick

The sock monkey 9 patch simply needs the binding stitched down.

Sock Monkey Top

This fun quilt needs to be quilted and finished before being sent to my cousin for her to gift to her new god daughter!

Pink and Red Zig Zag

And I did manage to start something new, BUT it’s for an HMQG challenge.  More on that later!

2011 WIPs:

  • 3×6 Bee Top (top done)

12 Quilts in ’12 – October Link Up

This month’s finish was completed on the plane on the way to Washington, DC (where it was gifted to an adorable 5 week old boy),  so I guess you’ll have to trust me that it was completed!

This quilt is one of the two that I shared here and I truly can’t decide which one I prefer!

I love this fabric, by Patty Sloniger for Michael Miller.  It’s super cute!

And flying geese are great for little boys, so it’s a perfect pairing.

I know I’ve been terrible about blogging, and my three readers have apparently noticed!  I may not have had time to blog, but fortunately I’ve still had time to quilt!  My September finish was the other version of this quilt:

I promise to share more on these two later!

And even though I spent most of August on vacation, I had a finish early in the month.  I finished up this quilt JUST in time for a wedding.

Obviously you’ll have to take my word on it, since I can’t find my pics!

WIP Wednesday – Doubling Down

With work picking up, vacation ahead (yay!) and a long list of quilts to make, I’ve had to think of ways to make my sewing time count a bit more.

One of my friends at the office is having her second boy, and I wanted to make her a quilt using backyard baby fabric and flying geese.  I liked the idea so much, I decided to make twice as many geese and make two complimentary quilts at the same time.  I will be sharing a tutorial (hopefully soon) on my method, but for now, here are some in process shots.

Day Formation…

Night Formation…

I’m really glad I got a head start on this — her baby made a very early appearance this weekend!  Day Formation is all done and ready to gift early next week, while the Night Formation top is done and waiting for the right baby boy.

We also have friends getting married this weekend, and I just had to make something for them.  It’s been a bit hectic, but I got this Irish Chain top together using delicious Flea Market Fancy.

I cut enough strips to make this top, plus a smaller baby quilt, but that will have to wait until after my vacation!

12 Quilts in ’12 – July Link Up

Hello and welcome to the July installment of the 12 Quilts in ’12 Challenge!  I’m hosting here on my blog, but Amy and Liz are playing along, too.  We hope you will join in!

I was a bit busy at work this month, and while it’s kept me away from the blog a bit, I’ve still managed to get a lot done in my studio.

Two of our friends recently had a baby girl.

They came to visit us (and show off baby Claire), so I made her this quilt.

I hope it will match their pink and grey nursery.

The fabric is A Walk in the Woods by Aneela Hoey, which I have used here, here and here.

For the pattern, I took the very popular Swoon pattern by Camille Roskelly and blew it up to 48″!

I’m a little late on a quilt for baby Maya, but one of the benefits of being late is that you get to know the baby and her personality a bit better.

I see pictures of Maya nearly everyday on Instagram, which I just love, and I know she is a very chic and sophisticated little lady!

So I came up with this quilt, which is predominantly neutral, but with some fun pops of color.

The perfect amount of whimsy for a baby, I think!

Inspiration for this quilt found here and here.
