WIP Wednesday – April 16, 2014

This past Saturday I dropped three quilts off with Pam for her to long-arm.  By Sunday she had already completed one and sent me this sneak peek!

Pips Quilting Peek

Obviously I love, love, love it!  Since she is cruising along so quickly, I decided to finish prepping binding and now have this lovely (red) stack.

Quilt Binding

I can’t wait to see the finished results in person!

Now here is a blast from the past… In 2012 HMQG hosted a challenge to make a mini in the colors of the guild’s logo.  The guild ordered some coordinating solids and we divvied them up.  I added to it (entirely from my scrap bin!) and set out to make my favorite, a kaleidoscope quilt.  The top went together super quickly and then sat, unfinished, until last week when I quilted it.  Monday night I went to put the binding on and decided on a whim to try machine sewing it.  It looks great on the front and, while there are no mistakes on the back, it’s not as precise as I would like.  I’m glad I tried a new technique, though, and I may practice this one again because it took less than 5 minutes to bind this mini!

HMQG Mini

I’m thrilled with how it turned out and I wish I’d finished it and hung up my minis earlier!

Mini Quilt Wall

Now I want mini quilts everywhere!

WIP Wednesday – Quarterly Report 2014Q1

I feel that I have been very productive since my “return” to quilting, but this WIP list is just bringing me down.  I stared at it a bunch last week and noticed that I had four oldies and four earmarked for myself — just right to divide into quarterly goals.

So… in 2014, each quarter I will set out to complete one WIP from the 2011 (and older) pile, one quilt for myself and up to three quilts for other people.  (Setting a goal for quarter end when you’re about 4 days out isn’t really fair, but I’m running with it!)

My Q1 goals are:

  1. Old: 3×6 Bee Quilt
  2. Me: Sherbet Pips Apple Core Quilt
  3. Gifts: Hazel, Darya and a coworker

My Q2 goals are:

  1. Old: HMQG Row Robin
  2. Me: Florence Kaleidoscope Quilt
  3. Gifts: I have two slotted so far

Here’s my first Quarterly Report:

I pieced a quick backing and basted the 3×6 Bee top and will be practicing some FMQ on my juki…

 3x6 Bee Basted

… I finished up a quilt for a coworker whose office shower is this week…

Blue and Mustard Triangles

…I got the binding on Hazel’s Quilt…

Hazels Quilt

…I assembled my ancient HMQG row robin into a lovely (and loooong) quilt top…

HMQG Row Robin

…and have decided to send three quilts to the long-armer!

HMQG Birthday Swap

Over at HMQG, we love birthdays.  We have a master list and everyone brings a small pressie for the person whose special day comes after them.  I wasn’t at the meeting last month, but Fi’s birthday is a week before mine.  She made me this badass potholder:

Why thank you for noticing!

Apparently no one in the guild has a birthday between January 9 and February 8, so I always get to make Beth’s gifts.  Last year, I made her a pouch and gave her a fat quarter of a coordinating print.  Here’s an in process shot:

This year, I wanted to do something a bit different.  I decided to conquer my fears and try my hand at bias tape.  I used a store bought potholder as a reference point and came up with this.

I know Beth will love the Tammis Keefe kitty print, so I included a fat quarter as well.

It came together really quickly and I think this size and shape will come in really handy — I can’t wait to make more potholders.

Hmm … should I call them pot-mitts, instead?

Pay It Forward {a Giveaway}

Earlier this week, I posted about being thankful.  Well, in addition to everything I mentioned there, I am also thankful for my friends.  I’m sure you remember from this post that I had a great time at Quilt Festival hanging out with old friends and meeting new ones.  Frieda is one of my good friends from HMQG and she and I had a blast hitting up nearly every booth at Festival.  She surprised me that weekend with some truly unexpected gifts:

A fat quarter bundle of How the Grinch Stole Christmas fabric from Robert Kaufman (she saw how much I loved the Lorax Bundle)…

And a fantastic bag that she knit herself!!! using one of my favorite fabric for the handles.  I mean seriously???

Since she had clearly put a lot of thought into my gifts, I had to wrack my brain to think of something she would like.  Frieda and I had both fawned over Lizzy House’s new Outfoxed fabric (charm packs of which Andover had donated for our giveaways at the meet ups) but we agreed that the pearl bracelets were our favorite fabrics from the line.  So I put myself to work, scouring the internet for all the pearl bracelet fabric Lizzy has put out over the years (from her Red Letter Day, 1001 Peeps and Outfoxed lines) and presto! I whipped up this fancy little half yard bundle for Frieda…

(P.S. When I gave this to her at the HMQG meeting, she had a yard of the green to split with me, so I knew I had gotten it right!)

I was really touched by Frieda’s spontaneous gift, so today I am celebrating friendship (and billing 2,000 hours this year — yikes!!) with a giveaway for my online friends!

One lucky reader will win…

… a Little Apples Jelly Roll!!!  I have been busy sewing with this fantastic fabric and, trust me, you definitely want to get your hands on some, it’s absolutely adorable!!
