WIP Wednesday – Doubling Down

With work picking up, vacation ahead (yay!) and a long list of quilts to make, I’ve had to think of ways to make my sewing time count a bit more.

One of my friends at the office is having her second boy, and I wanted to make her a quilt using backyard baby fabric and flying geese.  I liked the idea so much, I decided to make twice as many geese and make two complimentary quilts at the same time.  I will be sharing a tutorial (hopefully soon) on my method, but for now, here are some in process shots.

Day Formation…

Night Formation…

I’m really glad I got a head start on this — her baby made a very early appearance this weekend!  Day Formation is all done and ready to gift early next week, while the Night Formation top is done and waiting for the right baby boy.

We also have friends getting married this weekend, and I just had to make something for them.  It’s been a bit hectic, but I got this Irish Chain top together using delicious Flea Market Fancy.

I cut enough strips to make this top, plus a smaller baby quilt, but that will have to wait until after my vacation!

WIP Wednesday – Independence Day Edition

After last week’s ADD, I needed to sit down, look at my lists and really prioritize.  When I compared my to do list with my calendar, I realized that I only had two weekends before the baby shower for my friends A&J, so their quilt had to be at the top of my list.

After double and triple checking the math for my planned Mega Swoon quilt, I cut out my fabric and began assembling the components for the blocks.  When I put the pieces up on my design wall, I was surprised that almost all of the foxes (foxen?) were going the same direction!  I was able to make a quick adjustment and now they all face the same way.

At 48″ square, this quilt required a pieced back.  After a bit of head scratching, I just copied myself and did coins along the side.

I’m happy to report that this is quilted and I’m leisurely working on the binding!

Easily Distracted

I had major quilt ADD this week, but I did manage a finish, despite my lack of focus.  The girls helped me baste the Sherbet Pips quilt…

I finished the Happy Campers Quilt…

I began assembling the blocks for the Retro Flowers quilt top…

I made a quilt top out of these…

And even cut into my coveted Neptune stash!

WIP Wednesday 6/13/12

My oral surgery went great!  The previously recalcitrant wisdom tooth came out without a problem and I’ve had very little pain.  Since it was just one tooth, I’ve even been able to eat regular food, more or less, so the recovery has been easy.  Still, it did leave me a bit tired and in need of a few extra naps, so I’m glad I left myself these two quilts to hand bind.

I continued to feel a bit fatigued throughout the weekend, so I set small goals for myself.  Already in the Christmassy spirit, I decided to work on the Grinch Pillow Cover and I’m delighted with the way it turned out!  I simplified my original design (i.e. removed the cause of my procrastination) and it came together quickly from there.

Energized, I turned back to the Happy Campers Irish Chain quilt, finished off the blocks and began assembling them.

When I went to check on Amy, she helped me review my WIP list and evaluate my current priorities (something I have to do on a weekly basis these days).  I realized I’ve done so well with my sewing for others, I deserved a bit of time for myself.  I finished sewing all the curves on my Sherbet Pips Apple Core quilt, squared it up and just have to add borders.

WIP Wednesday 6/6/12

I wish I could get my WIP list below 10, but it just doesn’t seem destined to happen.  This week I made some progress on the Happy Campers Irish Chain quilt, but got a bit frustrated with it and threw up my hands in favor of an easier project.  Hey, I’m on painkillers, cut me some slack!

Instead, I made this quilt top for one of our closest friends to give to his sister.  She is having her baby any day now and her nursery is coral, aqua and “not girly.”  How hip is that??

This was totally inspired by a recent project from Red Pepper Quilts, but looking back at her quilt now, I think I took it in a bit of a scrappier direction.

I constructed the back as one giant scrappy log cabin block and am thrilled with how this came out.  I think I would like to try a scrappy strip project like this one day, but starting from the center and going all the way out.  How cool would that be!?

This is now basted, quilted and has the binding machine stitched to the front, so I have another one to recouperate with this weekend.  I also decided to bite the bullet and forge ahead with the Happy Campers Irish Chain Quilt, so I might be able to finish that one this weekend, too!

Beach Bumming

I thoroughly enjoyed being a beach bum this weekend.

My husband caught a lot of fish…

…my labrador made a new best friend…

…and I got the binding on three quilts.

There’s no rest for the weary, though, and I’m already on to the next project.

I probably could have finished the binding on the Christmas quilt last night, too, but I just found out I need to have oral surgery next weekend, so it will be nice to be able to do some light hand sewing while I recover.

Beach Preparedness

My husband and I love to go to the beach.  We catch up with friends, wear out our dogs and get away from all the stresses of life (i.e. work).  My husband loves to fish and can spend hours out in the bay, but when he does that I usually stay at the cabin and sew.  Often I bring my sewing machine, but lugging all my quilting gear can be a pain (mostly for my husband).  So this weekend, I thought if I could get a few quilts to the hand binding stage, that would be enough to keep me occupied.  Unfortunately an insane deal at work left me with no time to sew last week.  However, I’m pleased to say that this week I’m back on track!

Thanks to Amy, everything got basted this weekend and I filled up my stair railing!

My IG friends helped me decide on solid black with a strip of red to bind this quilt.

I’m very pleased with the even stitch on my new Juki.

Now I have three quilts and two dogs ready to go to the beach!  I still have two more nights to work, so I’m hoping to get up the courage to try some free motion quilting on the jelly roll race quilt.

I also decided how to finish my habitat challenge.  From last September.  Once I finally had a plan (and the right size zipper), it was implemented within an hour!  Here’s a peek for now…

Crossing one off the list today (from 2011!), and hopefully three or four more next week!

New Juki

Somehow I managed to convince my husband that I needed a new sewing machine.  I also managed to convince him that I needed it right away.  (Thanks, C!!!)  So I came home Friday from work and found this:

I was so excited about a weekend of getting to know my new machine… until I realized that I got a lemon!  The shank on this particular machine is slightly askew, which led to the presser foot sitting at a very noticeable (to me!) angle.  Fortunately, the online sellers were very helpful and a new machine is arriving today!  A big thank you to all my IG friends who helped calm me down and convince me I wasn’t crazy!

Disappointing as it was, I got a lot done in preparation for the re-arrival of my Juki (a TL2012Q, for those inquiring minds).  Amy and I went to Frieda’s house to play with her Accuquilt Go! and they were instrumental in coming up with a layout and plan of attack for my spring green and yellow retro flowers quilt.

Since Robin lent me both sizes of the drunkard’s path dies, the center flower will be large and the surrounding flowers will be small.  So far I only have 3 fabrics cut … out of 13!

I made a list and it turns out I am supposed to make 10 baby quilts between now and October.  Wow.  While I was making the backing for the rawhide quilt, I decided to double down.  Taking inspiration from here and here, I will be making my own neutral farfalle quilt!  All the background fabrics will be different neutrals (a chunk are from the bella neutral solids charm pack, plus kona white, snow, bone, khaki and other assorted neutrals) and the farfalle will be random scraps from my stash.

The best part is that I’m doing this as leaders/enders!  That’s right, every time something passes through my machine, another of these puppies gets made.  I’m already 1/4 of the way there!

I see you rolling your eyes, yes that is another project!  However, I’m about to cross four (4) WIPs off my list…

  • the Swoon quilt, which is a huge quilt.  Erin is long-arming it right now and should have it back to me at the HMQG meeting on Saturday.  I have already prepped the binding.
  • the rawhide string quilt is already basted and it’s the first thing slated to run through the Juki.
  • I ordered backing and binding fabric for my Christmas patchwork quilt and…
  • my Pom Pom de Paris jelly roll race quilt.

My goal is to have the latter three quilted and all the bindings machine stitched to the front before Memorial Day weekend.  That way, if I’m not working, I can take them to the beach and hand stitch the binding there.

Does it seem a bit optimistic to think that I will meet all my goals and not get stuck at the office?  We’ll see!
